Meet couples who found their passions — and each other — right here at UIC.

Eternal Flames

As transfer students in 1992, Darren and Tina kept running into each other in science prerequisites like chemistry and pre-calculous. They dated for five years, and the rest is history. Darren is a paramedic/ firefighter with the Village of Arlington Heights, and Tina is the associate director of member engagement for the Society of Thoracic Surgeons. They’ve been happily married for 29 years, and their greatest accomplishment and source of pride is their family. Darren and Tina have two daughters, one of whom is a junior at UIC studying earth and environmental science with a minor in biology and a member of the Women’s Rugby Club.

Fatima was taking notes for a sick friend in a Differential Equations class that Aman was enrolled in. “He was a complete nerd,” she said, “with tapered jeans, plaid shirt and messy hair.” That didn’t stop Aman from hanging out with Fatima’s friends group, then asking if they could hang out solo. Most of their dates were in what is now Student Center East, in the quad and Montgomery Lounge. Back then, their goals were simple: having successful careers and raising a family together. In addition to having two wonderful children, Aman works as senior master data management lead for a renal health care company, and Fatima is an agile coach for a financial company.

“How we met is an unusual story,” Linda said. She was engaged at the time, and her fiancée introduced them. A change of plans followed, and Linda and Bruce got married while Linda was in her last year of pharmacy school. After a career as a community pharmacist, Bruce now owns Vallie View Farm, an equine boarding facility that produced a World Champion Racehorse. For her part, Linda worked as a hospital pharmacist and assistant director for many years at UI Health before becoming a clinical assistant professor at the Retzky College of Pharmacy. They’ve been married for 51 years, and have three children and three grandchildren.

Donna and Hans met at UIC’s Navy Pier campus. He was an Air Force veteran working part-time for the Post Office while studying engineering; she was working part-time at AT&T studying education. Dances at the gym, long walks from class (and a few down Grand Ave. from the bus stop in snowy, sub-zero days) sealed the deal. “We made such wonderful friends,” Donna said, “The teachers were fantastic. Probably some of the best years of our lives.”
